HW #6

I cant help it... from Aja on Vimeo.

While watching my video I was suprised at what I saw. I was sitting there at 1 o'clock listening to music, on the computer, and texting on my phone...all because I ahd nothing better to do. It was also suprising because this has become my routine over the summer. Sitting in the same spot until the wee hours of the morning doing all of these things, but still not getting anything done. Anything productive atleast.

After watching this video I noticed that I am missing out on a lot of opprutunites by sitting here night after night after night. Instead of sitting here for hours at a time, I could've been doing a lot of things other than this. I noticed that my mom and i could have been haver talking to eachother instead of me in the living room and her in her room. I think that we would talk to eachother more and get along better if we didn't have all these different digital devices seperating her. I can admit that i would rather watch t.v or talk on my phone than talk to my mom sometimes. I think that these digital devices contribute to the problem.

In my video it looked like I was enjoying what I was doing, but as I look back on it I can not remember what was making me smile. I think that this goes to show that these devices are satisfying in the moment, but is hardly ever important enough for it to be remembered.

  2. Hey Aja,

I liked how in your video you showed how you deal with the phone and internet at the same time, I also liked how in your post you acknowledged that you seemed like you were enjoying what you were doing but can't remember what you were doing, so to me that tells me that whatever you were doing wasnt so important.

In your post about your video you stated that you could have been talking to your mom which would probally be more meaningful than having her record you doing what you always do. I also think that all the statemets that you brought up made sense and had a lot of significance.

I can connect to you because in my video I wanted to watch my movie instead of talk to my mom which would have probally be more meaninful because you never know when the person you love is going to be gone and not only that we can learn a lot more from the elders insead on doing the same routine everyday.

I think that you should write more about how technology is only satisfying when you have it in front of you but when its not there you dont remember what you were doing because it can affect us in a lot of ways. I also think that you should write about how technology affects us doing our work.

I liked your post and the points you brought up I hope to work with you more later.

  3. Dear Aja,

Like my video, yours is also gripping stuff....not. The lighting was so dark that I couldn't really see your expression so you didn't seem as bored as I did in my video.

I think we both had the same reaction about how our time could have been better spent. The fact is that we use the computer for homework and information, and if we also use it for our down time, there is a whole lot of time that we are sitting and staring. I appreciate your honesty about saying that you might use the digital devices as a way of avoiding conversation that might take a little more effort, for example with your mother.

What you say about using the devices late into the night suggests an addiction that we all share.
I guess the challenge is to try to balance our lives with more live conversation, relating to people face to face, and, for me, getting outside into frest air and having physical exercise.

It's funny but I think that if we filmed ourselves reading a book, we wouldn't have the same reaction as we have had to our videos of ourselves looking looking at computers. For one thing, you can get more comfortable reading a book and somehow there is the idea that reading a book is a very positive thing that exercises the imagination. Reading material on a computer shouldn't be all that different, but it certainly looks different. We don't look like such zombies (I looked more zombyish than you did). Hope fully on the next video project we'll get the chance to do something creative for class.

  4. To Julie,
Thanks for taking the time to watch my video and read my thoughts. I appreciate you adding your thoughts as well =]

In your comment you pointed out that I sould talk more about why these digital representaion devices are satisfying at the moment, but then quickly forgot about. This was helpful because even though I talked about it a little bit in my post, your comment made me think about it more deeply.

In my post I was more focused on the recreational part of technology. How it usually used as something to just pass the time, and is often useless. In your comment you brought to my attention that technology often distracdts us from doing work. I never really thought about something often considered useless can stop someone from doing something useful.

After reading you comment (and rereading my post)I noticed that we both were interested in how different digital devices keep us from connecting/ bonding with the ones that we care about most. We both realized that we would rather talk to people who don't really matter (or who we don't care about) instead of spending time with the ones we love.

    Thanks for your comment =]

    To Devin,
Thanks for taking the time to watch my boring video, and leaving a comment. In your comment you talked about having a balance (like you did in your post). Having a balance with technology can be between anything (for you its sports, for me its relating to people face to face), this made me want to try harder to have this balance and was also very helpful.

You mentioned taht if we were to film ourselves reading a book that it wouldn't be as boring and we wouldn't have the same reactions. I would have to somewhat disagree because reading a book can cause us to look "zombyish" as well. I feel like we can get enveloped in a book just like a computer or any other type of technology. I feel the only reason a book is different (or accepted?) is because it is considered educational.

Something that we both seem interested in is how we could be making better use of our time. Even though we know this do you think we would really make the effort. It's like knowing you should be doing something...does that mean you're going to do it just because it's right???

    Thanks for the Comment =]
